BLL members are partners in the new European project DEFORM
DEFORM (Deepfake detection and Explainability using Foundation Representation Models) develops explainable AI methods for detecting multimodal deepfakes (image, video and audio), designed to support expert judgement in forensic, judicial, and policy contexts.
DEFORM will develop multimodal manipulation detection and provide modular and multi-level explainability mechanisms for deepfake detection, supporting transparency and admissibility of evidence in forensic investigation until court examination. The project will inform policy makers and regulators, translating its findings into recommendations for stakeholders addressing synthetic and manipulated media. Contributions will also be made to relevant standardisation.
The project, funded by the European Union, runs from September 2026 through August 2029.
Legal research is done by LawTech Research (Catherine Jasserand), RADL (Els Kindt) and VUB. More information can be found on the dedicated DEFORM project website or with the BLL members.
